About aremath
aremath is a small collection of free calculators for everyday measuring and project planning: square footage, area, volume, cubic yards, topsoil, sod, tile and asphalt. Each tool is built to be quick, clear and easy to use on a phone.
The name
An are is a metric unit of area: a square ten meters on a side, or 100 square meters. A hectare is 100 ares. aremath is area math.
How the calculators are built
Every calculator is based on standard, well-known formulas, and the formula is written out on the same page as the tool, with a worked example. You should never have to take a number on trust.
Before a calculator is published, it is tested with known inputs and the output is compared with results worked out by hand. Those tests are run again whenever a calculator changes.
The calculations run in your browser. The numbers you type are not sent to a server and are not stored.
What the results are, and are not
The calculators give estimates based on the numbers you enter and on typical values, such as the weight of a cubic yard of topsoil. Real projects involve waste, settling, uneven ground and differences between suppliers. For real purchases and building work, confirm quantities with your supplier or contractor.
